Shakespeare Under The Stars

It is not often that one has the opportunity to watch a professional production of King Lear under the stars in North Queensland. But the opportunity came during our recent visit to see our daughter and grandson in the beautiful Queens Gardens in Townsville.

TheatreiNQ now in its 17th season with Shakespeare Under the Stars presented a stunning King Lear, directed by Terri Brabon, their Artistic Director with her multi-talented partner Brendan O’Connor- not many people can say they are an Actor (Kent)/Lighting Designer and Set Designer. The actors had to put up with the sounds of cockatoos and other wild life as they present their play to a packed audience in the Gardens. Talk about acoustics!

We really enjoyed ourselves sitting under a large mango tree even though we were ‘bombed’ with mangos from Possums dining in the tree and shortly after the interval sprayed as well!!! As an Australian pointed out to us POMS- it could have been bats.

It was a little different from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Not quite as good, but interesting, dangerous, wet and enjoyable.
